AI Search for Medical and Allied Health Practices
A patient doesn’t always start with Google any more. Plenty now open ChatGPT or Gemini and type “physio near me for a sore shoulder” or “what does a podiatrist actually treat”, then read the answer before they’ve looked at a single practice website.
Roy Morgan’s March quarter 2026 figures show 13.6 million Australians, 58% of people aged 14 and over, use an AI tool every four weeks.
A practice that isn’t structured for AI tools to read, trust and cite stays invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding who to book with.
Does This Apply to Your Patient Base Yet?
Start here, because the honest answer varies more in healthcare than in almost any other industry.

The same Roy Morgan research breaks usage down by age, and the spread is wide:
| Age Group | Using AI Tools Every Four Weeks |
|---|---|
| 25-34 | 74% |
| 35-49 | 72% |
| 18-24 | 68% |
| 14-17 | 66% |
| 50-64 | 50% |
| 65+ | 31% |
A physiotherapy, psychology, fertility or dental practice serving mostly 25 to 49 year olds is already being searched for this way. A podiatry or geriatric practice where most patients are over 65 has more time, since fewer than a third of that group use AI tools at all.
Neither is permanent. But it should shape how urgently you act, and any agency telling every practice this is equally urgent is not looking at the data.
Why Healthcare Faces a Different Set of Rules
Most GEO advice written for medical practices comes out of the US or UK, and it leans hard on one tactic: patient testimonials and reviews, fed into content to build trust signals an AI engine can pick up.
That tactic is not available here.
Section 133 of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law prohibits the use of testimonials in advertising a regulated health service. Ahpra’s guidelines define a testimonial as a recommendation or positive statement about the clinical aspects of a regulated health service. Breaching the advertising provisions is a criminal offence, and penalties were increased under amendments to the National Law.
So the single most common tactic in the overseas healthcare GEO playbook is off the table. The gap has to be closed another way.
What You Can and Cannot Use
This is where most advice gets it wrong, including advice that tells practices to strip every review from their site.

Not every review is a testimonial. Ahpra’s own guidance is clear: comments that are not about clinical aspects, for example about customer service or communication style, are not considered testimonials and may be used in advertising.
| Review Content | Can You Use It? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| “My knee pain is completely gone after six sessions” | No | Clinical outcome; this is a testimonial. |
| “Dr Chen explained everything clearly and never rushed me” | Yes | Communication style, not a clinical claim. |
| “Reception got me in within two days and billing was simple” | Yes | Service experience, not a clinical claim. |
| “Best physio in Sydney, fixed my back” | No | Clinical claim. |
Three more things worth knowing, because they routinely catch practices out:
Social media counts as advertising. If a clinic’s Facebook page promotes the practice, it must not carry testimonials. Where a platform won’t let you remove them, Ahpra expects you to disable the review function.
You are not responsible for platforms you don’t control. Ahpra does not hold advertisers responsible for reviews published on third-party platforms where the practice has no control over the review function.
Do not cherry-pick. Selectively editing or filtering reviews can itself breach the law by being misleading. Publish complete, unedited, non-clinical reviews or none at all.
None of this is legal advice. Check anything borderline against Ahpra’s guidance or with your professional indemnity insurer.
What Actually Builds AI Trust for a Regulated Practice
Four things carry the weight testimonials would otherwise carry.
Named, credentialled practitioners. An AI engine weighing a health answer looks for a real person, not “our friendly team”. A physiotherapist’s name, Ahpra registration, specific area of practice and years of experience, linked to a proper bio page, outperforms any five-star badge. Health sits in the category AI tools handle most cautiously, so this matters more here than anywhere else. Our guide on E-E-A-T for AI search covers the signals in detail.
Specific service detail. “General physiotherapy” tells an AI tool almost nothing. “Post-surgical knee rehabilitation, sports physiotherapy and dry needling, Monday to Saturday at our Parramatta clinic” tells it exactly who to recommend the page for. A psychologist should name modalities and client groups. A podiatrist should name conditions treated, not just the job title.
Answer-first content. Open every page and FAQ answer with the direct answer in the first sentence, then add detail. A page answering “does Medicare cover this?” in the opening line gets pulled into AI answers far more often than one burying it three paragraphs down.
Schema and technical foundations. MedicalWebPage and Organization schema, Author schema linking each practitioner to a real bio, and FAQPage schema on common patient questions give AI tools a clean summary of who you are. Note the spelling: the schema.org type is Organization, with a z, even on an Australian site. None of this replaces the basics, fast loading, mobile-friendly, secure hosting, a complete Google Business Profile for every location. It sits on top.
One Extra Layer for Allied Health
Practices working with NDIS participants get searched through NDIS-specific language as much as clinical language. “NDIS physio near me” and “OT for a plan review” behave differently from general health queries.
Making eligibility, plan management types accepted and referral pathways as explicit and answer-first as your clinical detail does most of the work. A practice already investing in NDIS-focused web design has a head start, since that structured, plain-language content does double duty.
A Starting Checklist
No practice needs to rebuild its site to make progress.
- Add a named practitioner as visible author on every service page, linked to a bio with real credentials and Ahpra registration detail.
- Rewrite the opening two sentences of each service page to answer the most common patient question directly.
- Audit reviews against the clinical versus non-clinical test above. Remove clinical-outcome comments. Keep service and communication comments, unedited.
- Check whether your social pages have review functions that need disabling.
- Add MedicalWebPage, Organization and Author schema, then test with Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Claim and complete a Google Business Profile for every location.
- Build an FAQ around what patients actually ask at reception: fees, Medicare and private health rebates, referral requirements, wait times. Mark it up with FAQPage schema.
- Add a “last reviewed” date to any page mentioning Medicare rebates, private health rules or Ahpra requirements, since these change.
What Doesn’t Change
AI search sits on top of ordinary healthcare SEO. It doesn’t replace it.
Accurate practice details, a fast secure website, strong local signals and compliant reviews still drive most traffic, and still feed how much an AI tool trusts the site in the first place. Ranking in Google’s AI Overviews and getting cited by ChatGPT draw on the same foundation as normal search visibility, extended through generative engine optimisation.
Practices in other regulated industries hit the same pattern. Our piece on law firms navigating AI search shows how regulation shapes the tactics, not whether AI search matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI search for healthcare practices?
AI search for healthcare means structuring a medical or allied health practice’s website so tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity can find, trust and cite it when a patient asks a health question, without relying on the testimonials Ahpra prohibits.
Can a practice use patient testimonials to improve AI visibility?
No. Section 133 of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law prohibits testimonials in advertising a regulated health service, including on websites and social media. Build trust through named practitioner credentials, specific service detail and structured content instead.
Are all patient reviews banned?
No, and this is widely misunderstood. Ahpra treats comments about clinical aspects as testimonials, which cannot be used. Comments about non-clinical matters such as customer service or communication style are not testimonials and may be used, provided they are complete and unedited.
How many Australians use AI tools?
Roy Morgan found 13.6 million Australians, 58% of those aged 14 and over, use an AI tool every four weeks. Usage varies sharply by age: 74% of 25 to 34 year olds against 31% of over-65s, which matters when your patient base skews older.
Does AI search replace SEO for medical practices?
No. It builds on the same foundation: accurate details, strong local signals, quality content and technical basics. It adds a layer focused on structure, named authorship and schema.
Is it risky for a clinic to be cited by an AI chatbot?
The larger risk is a patient acting on a general AI answer instead of seeing a practitioner. An accurate, named-author page lowers that risk by giving the AI tool a trustworthy, human-backed source to point patients toward.
