No Website. No Google Listing. No Social Profiles. Then 125 Phone Calls and 100+ Organic Keywords.
Original Plumbing came to us as a brand new Sydney business with zero online presence. We built the website, created the Google Business Profile and social profiles, laid two months of SEO foundations and ran a six-month Google Ads call campaign. 125 phone calls, 100+ organic keywords and 739 Business Profile views followed.
SEO for Plumbers
A licensed Sydney plumber with nothing online
Original Plumbing is a licensed Sydney plumbing business servicing every suburb across the city. Mustafa, the owner, is Sydney born and bred and has spent his whole working life on the tools. The business is not a franchise. His name, his licence and his reputation sit behind every job, and that shapes how the whole operation runs.
It shows up in the way he quotes. Fixed price agreed before work starts. No callout fee when the job goes ahead. No upselling. Customers get told what something costs, then they decide.
The brief was simple: get the phone ringing now, and build something that keeps it ringing later.
Everything from nothing, in the toughest trade market
A single-owner plumber, a brand new domain and a city where the big players outspend everyone. Three problems had to be solved at the same time.
Sydney plumbing is one of the most competitive search markets in the country
Franchise operators and lead-generation platforms bid heavily on every plumbing term in Sydney. A single-owner business competes against marketing budgets many times its size. Mustafa needed to win on relevance and speed of response, because he was never going to win on spend.
Everything had to be built from nothing, and built for how plumbing customers behave
There was no site to improve, no listing to optimise and no audience to speak to. Every asset had to be created. And it had to be created for a customer who does not browse. Someone with water coming through the ceiling calls. The site had to load fast on a phone, put the number where a thumb lands, and answer one question quickly: can this person get here today?
A brand new domain takes months to rank, and the phone needed to ring now
A new domain has no history and no authority. After its first month online it ranked for twelve keywords, all of them between positions 51 and 100. Nobody was going to find it organically for a while. A new business cannot wait that long for its first customer.
Build for the phone call, then let the foundations compound
Paid calls carried the business while the new domain had no rankings. Two months of SEO basics kept earning long after the invoice was paid. The order mattered as much as the work.
Build the site around the phone call
The call button became the primary conversion, not an afterthought. A sticky call bar, an SMS option for people who cannot talk, and a quote form with a service dropdown that matches how customers describe their problem.
Structure the site by service, not by menu convenience
Nine service pages, each targeting how people actually search: blocked drains, hot water systems, emergency plumber, leak detection, tap and toilet repairs, gas fitting, bathroom and kitchen, commercial plumbing, preventative maintenance.
Create the Google Business Profile, Facebook and Instagram from scratch
Verified listing, categories, service areas, photos, and social profiles the business could post to. For a local plumber, the Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees.
Lay the SEO foundations in two months
September and October 2025, alongside the build and the profile setup. Technical setup, service page structure, metadata, internal linking and schema. Not an ongoing campaign. Two months of basics, done properly, then left to compound.
Run a six-month Google Ads call campaign
Call ads rather than landing pages, because an emergency plumbing customer wants to dial, not browse. This was the channel that had to ring the phone from week one.
Test Meta lead ads for one month
A single lead-form campaign in October 2025, on the brand new Facebook page, to benchmark what social could produce against search.

What we did, and what it produced
Google Ads: 125 phone calls in six months
Emergency plumbing has the clearest intent of any trade search. Someone typing "emergency plumber near me" at midnight is not comparing options. They are calling the first business that looks legitimate and available.
We built the campaign to ring the phone rather than send people to a page. Call ads put the number in the ad itself, so a tap is a call. It ran for six months, 29 September 2025 to 30 March 2026, and produced 125 phone calls from 960 clicks. Thirteen in every hundred people who clicked picked up the phone. For a business that had no phone ringing at all in August, that is the result that mattered most.
That was the plan from day one. A brand new domain takes months to rank. Paid calls carried the business through the period when organic could not, and the campaign wound down as the rankings took over. The chart shows it: calls peaked through November and early December, dipped over Christmas as they do for every trade, recovered in February, then tailed off into March as the budget drew down.
SEO: two months of foundations, more than 100 keywords a year later
Plenty of plumbers get sold an open-ended SEO contract they cannot easily judge. This one ran for two months, September and October 2025, with a clear scope: get the foundations right, then let them work. The client knew exactly what he was paying for and when it finished.
The starting point was a domain that did not exist a month earlier. After its first few weeks online it ranked for twelve keywords, every one of them between positions 51 and 100. Across those two months we covered the technical layer: crawlability, indexation, mobile rendering, Core Web Vitals and schema markup. Then the content layer: one page per service, written around the phrases customers actually type, with location relevance built into the copy rather than stuffed into a suburb list.
Then we stopped, and the site kept climbing. By March 2026 the footprint had grown to around 40 keywords. By September 2026 it was more than 100. Ten months after the SEO work finished, on a domain that started from nothing. That is what properly built foundations do: they keep earning rankings long after the invoice is paid.
Organic sessions followed. From 41 in December to 96 in February, a gain of 134%, all of it after the SEO work had ended. This is the approach behind our SEO for plumbers service.
Google Business Profile: created from scratch, found by people who did not know the name
There was no Business Profile when we started. We created it, verified it, set the categories and service areas, and loaded it with real photos of real jobs. For a local plumber it often drives more calls than the website does. This one earned 739 profile views, and four of the five top search terms that surfaced it were non-brand: "plumber merrylands", "french drain", "drainage downpipe near me" and "local plumber". People who did not know the business by name found it anyway.
Two useful signals fell out of that. "Plumber merrylands" led by a clear margin, which pinned the real catchment to western Sydney rather than "all of Sydney". And "french drain" plus "drainage downpipe near me" pointed straight at which service page to build out next.
| Search term | Impressions | Type |
|---|---|---|
| plumber merrylands | 24 | Non-brand |
| french drain | 19 | Non-brand |
| drainage downpipe near me | < 15 | Non-brand |
| local plumber | < 15 | Non-brand |
| original plumbing | < 15 | Brand |
Meta lead ads: a one-month test
The Facebook and Instagram pages were also new. We set both up in September, then ran a single Meta lead-form campaign through October 2025 to see what the brand new page could produce. The form sat on the ad itself, so nobody had to leave Facebook to enquire. It produced ten leads from $381.62 in spend, a cost per lead of $38.16, with a click-through rate of 2.26%.
We stopped it after the month. Not because it failed, but because Google Ads was already ringing the phone with far higher intent, and the client wanted budget concentrated where the emergencies were. Ten leads for under $400 is a result worth recording, and it gave us a benchmark to judge search against.
The website: built from a blank page for people in a hurry
There was nothing to redesign. We built the site from a blank page on WordPress with a custom theme rather than a page builder, which keeps it fast and keeps hosting costs sensible. Speed mattered more here than on most sites. Emergency traffic arrives on mobile, often on patchy reception, and leaves if a page stalls.
Trust signals went high on the page because plumbing is a trust purchase. Licence number, lifetime workmanship guarantee, fixed pricing, and a real photo of Mustafa in front of his van. Not stock imagery of a smiling model holding a wrench.
We also gave the business something most plumbers skip: a reason to come back. The Fix N Flow membership offers priority service and a standing discount, which turns one emergency job into a long-term customer. See more of our work in our portfolio.
What actually moved the needle
A brand new business with no online presence became findable in twelve months, and the sequencing was the point. In September 2025 we built the website, created the Google Business Profile and set up Facebook and Instagram from scratch. A Google Ads call campaign started the same week and rang the phone 125 times over six months while the new domain had no rankings to speak of. Two months of basic SEO in September and October laid foundations that kept compounding on their own, from 12 keywords to more than 100 by September 2026. Paid calls carried the business through the period when organic could not. Run any one alone and the numbers look modest. Run them in this order and each makes the others cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build a plumber website from scratch?
A plumbing website with service pages, booking forms and tracking usually takes four to six weeks from brief to launch. Content gathering is normally the slowest part, so having photos, licence details and service descriptions ready shortens it.
Can two months of SEO really produce results a year later?
Yes, if the time is spent on foundations rather than quick wins. Technical setup, service page structure, metadata, schema and internal linking give a new domain something Google can keep crawling and ranking. Original Plumbing went from 12 keywords to more than 100 in the ten months after its two SEO months ended.
How does a brand new plumbing business get its first customers online?
Google Ads first, because it rings the phone within days. Set up the Google Business Profile and website at the same time so the ads have somewhere credible to point. Then lay SEO foundations so the organic side builds while the ads carry the business. That is the order Original Plumbing followed.
What is a Google Ads call campaign?
A call campaign shows ads with the phone number in the ad itself, so a tap on mobile dials the business directly rather than opening a website. It suits emergency trades where the customer wants to speak to someone now, and Google counts every call as a conversion.
Does a plumber really need a website when Google Business Profile drives calls?
Google Business Profile drives a lot of local calls, but it ranks better when a strong website backs it, and it cannot carry service detail, pricing transparency or trust signals the way a site can. The two work together.
