How Australians Use AI to Search: What the 2026 Research Shows
Australians have not abandoned Google. They have added AI on top of it. New research from YouGov puts numbers to that shift, and the picture is more interesting than a simple “AI is taking over” headline.
This article breaks down what the 2026 research says about how Australians use AI to search, and what it means for anyone running a website here.
Where these numbers come from
The headline findings come from YouGov’s report, Searching for answers: How AI is changing online discovery in 2026. YouGov ran the study online from 21 April to 29 May 2026, surveying 1,002 Australian adults aged 18 and over, with results weighted to be nationally representative.
We have paired that with Roy Morgan’s ongoing tracking of AI tool use in Australia, plus what we see day to day in client work at Aus Asia Online. Where a figure comes from a specific study, we name it.
How many Australians use AI to search?

YouGov research from 2026 found 72% of Australian online searchers use AI assistants in some way, but only 16% treat AI as their main starting point. Most people use AI alongside Google rather than instead of it.
That gap between 72% and 16% is the real story. Nearly three in four Australians have folded AI into how they look things up. Far fewer have made it their first stop. A person might ask ChatGPT for a quick explanation, then open Google to compare prices, read reviews, or find a business nearby. That back-and-forth is becoming the normal way Australians find things online. Our guide on AI search vs traditional search explains where each one tends to win.
More than a third use AI every day

One finding stands out. YouGov found 36% of Australian online searchers now start at least one new search a day with an AI assistant. That is a habit, not an experiment.
The generational split is sharp:
- 59% of Gen Z start a daily search with AI
- 48% of Millennials do the same
- Just 14% of Baby Boomers do
Gen Z Australians are more than four times as likely as Baby Boomers to begin a search with AI each day. Roy Morgan’s tracking points the same way, with AI use peaking around 74% among 25 to 34 year olds before falling away after 50.
The practical read for a small business: younger customers may already be finding you through an AI assistant rather than a Google results page. Older customers still lean on traditional search. Most businesses need both covered.
Australians use AI more than they trust it

Here is the tension. YouGov found just 39% of Australian online searchers trust the information AI assistants give them, lower than their trust in traditional search engines and maps. So 72% use it, and only 39% trust it.
That gap is an opportunity rather than a problem. People want to check where an answer came from. Content that names its sources, explains its reasoning, and links out to evidence gives both the reader and the AI something solid to lean on. Vague, unsourced copy gives neither.
That is exactly how AI systems decide who to quote. Our post on E-E-A-T for AI search breaks down the signals that make a site a trusted source.
Which AI tools do Australians use?

ChatGPT leads clearly. Roy Morgan puts it at roughly 10.5 million Australian users, more than double its nearest rival. Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot follow, helped by being built into tools people already open every day, like Gmail, Google Search and Microsoft Office. Meta AI has grown quickly through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The lesson is not to chase one platform. People move between tools depending on the task. A page that ChatGPT finds easy to quote is not automatically easy for Gemini or Copilot to use. Our guide on getting your website ready for ChatGPT and Perplexity is a sensible starting point.

AI Overviews are changing what a good ranking is worth
AI is not only a separate app now. It sits inside Google itself, through AI Overviews, the AI-written summary above the blue links. Many Australian searches now end without a click to any website, and that happens more often when an AI Overview appears.
This changes what ranking well is worth. A business can hold the top organic spot and still lose visits, simply because fewer people need to click. Our guide on ranking in Google AI Overviews covers what to do about it, and how it connects to generative engine optimisation, the practice of getting content quoted by AI rather than only ranked by search engines.
What this means for Australian small businesses

AI search is normal now. With 72% of online searchers using AI in some form, this is not an emerging trend to watch. Plan for it this quarter.
Trust is the lever. Only 39% trust AI answers, so people check sources. Clear, well-sourced content wins twice: readers believe it, and AI systems quote it.
Younger customers move first. Businesses selling to under-40s should assume many are already meeting the brand through an AI assistant.
A top ranking is not the only goal. Getting quoted by an AI tool counts as a win, even when nobody clicks through.
One platform is not enough. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI all matter, so content needs to be structured clearly enough for any of them to use.

Frequently asked questions
How many Australians use AI to search?
YouGov research from 2026 found 72% of Australian online searchers use AI assistants in some way, though only 16% treat AI as their main starting point. Most people use AI alongside Google rather than replacing it.
Do Australians trust AI search results?
Not fully. YouGov found just 39% of Australian online searchers trust the information AI assistants provide, lower than their trust in traditional search engines and maps. People want visible sources before they believe an AI answer.
Which age group uses AI search most?
Younger Australians, by a wide margin. YouGov found 59% of Gen Z and 48% of Millennials start at least one search a day with AI, against 14% of Baby Boomers. Roy Morgan shows use peaking around 74% among 25 to 34 year olds.
Are Australians replacing Google with AI?
No, most are combining the two. Only 16% name AI as their main starting point, while 72% use it in some way. The common pattern is asking AI for a quick answer, then using Google to compare, verify or find a local business.
What should businesses do about AI search?
Make content clear, well-sourced and easy to quote. Name your sources, answer questions directly, and structure pages so any AI tool can extract a clean answer. Getting cited by AI now matters alongside ranking in organic search.
