What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of formatting your content so search and AI engines lift it as the direct answer. It targets Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results, using concise answers, question-led structure and schema markup that engines can read and trust.

Traditional SEO works to rank a page in the list. AEO works to own the box above the list. Those are different goals. A page can rank on page one and still lose the snippet, the Overview and the voice answer to a competitor who formatted their content better.

AEO fixes that. It’s a core part of our AI SEO services, focused on the direct-answer layer.

Why AEO Matters

The click is no longer guaranteed. Google AI Overviews now appear on around one in five searches, based on Ahrefs’ 2025 analysis of 146 million keywords, and far more for the question-style searches buyers run. Plenty of those answers never send a click. The user reads the box and moves on.
